FAI Council Meet EPA for Discussion on Greenhouse Gases

In November 2024, the FAI Council attended a meeting to discuss National GHG and air pollutant inventories, particularly with a focus on the role of nitrogen fertiliser and lime. The EPA were represented by Bernard Hyde, Professor Mary Francis Rochford and Tómas Murray.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Total Irish GHG 2022 – 60.6 Mt CO2e
  • Agriculture GHG emissions accounted for 38.5% of total emissions while Ammonia emissions from agriculture accounted for 99.4% of national emissions.
  • Methodological approaches were discussed including Tier 1, 2 and 3 methods as well as reporting cycles and documentation.
  • Of the 19.5% of total Agricultural GHG emissions that arises from Agricultural Soils, 36.9% of this can be attributed directly to Inorganic Fertilisers.
  • Liming (CO2) accounted for 2.8% of Irelands Agriculture sectors GHG in 2022.

The FAI wish to thank the EPA for an open and honest discussion and look forward to continued engagement in the future.
